The Choir The Ole Miss Concert Singers in twenty-one years of traveling the world(1980-2001), are distinguished as having won more major international choral competitions than any other American choir. The choir appeared at national or regional conventions of the American Choral Directors Association in 1982, 1983, 1988, 1990, 1996, 1998, and 1999. An invitation to perform at the National ACDA convention is the highest honor that can be can be accorded an American choir. The Concert Singers received the highest score of any college choir auditioning to sing at the 1999 convention. The Concert Singers were the only nonprofessional choir selected to sing for the 1995 ACDA National Leadership Conference in Lawton, Oklahoma. In 1991, the Concert Singers received a standing ovation in its Carnegie Hall debut. On three occasions the choir has staged major choral works in residence with the Atlanta Ballet, and is the only out-of-state choir that has performed with the Atlanta Ballet. Over a period of twenty-one years, the choir took eleven tours of Europe and one of Mexico. The Concert Singers won the grand prize in six international competitions held in England, France, Bulgaria, Italy (2) , and Austria, respectively. In winning the 1994 Recontres Internationales de Chant Choral in Tours, France, the Concert Singers swept all five top prizes, marking only the second time this had been accomplished in the competition’s twenty-seven year history. This summer, Concert Singers alumni will compete again in this competition. In 1998, the Concert Singers won the most prestigious choral competition in the world, the annual Gran Premio Europeo di Canto Chorale, in Gorizia, Italy, which only the previous year’s winners of a unique alliance of six international choral competitions may enter. The Concert Singers is the only choir from the United States that has ever won this competition. In 2000, the Concert Singers won the mixed choir division in the first ever Choir Olympics , held Linz, Austria. The Concert Singers have always taken pride in receiving not only professional acclaim, but acclaim from audiences worldwide. | |
